Before we start, let's define Wood Badge.

How is Wood Badge structured in Canada?

Why the change to Wood Badge II?

Scouts Canada introduced the new Canadian Path youth program that changed how we deliver Scouting in Canada.  The changes centered on what the youth told us they want:

  • The youth want to lead the activities and adventures

  • The youth want a lot more outdoor adventures

  • The youth need skills to plan, deliver and learn from each adventure

  • The youth still want to experience Scouting traditions and ensure that everyone is equally involved

Hence we developed four key foundations -- the program must be:

  • Youth-led

  • Based on adventure

  • Allow youth to plan - do - review

  • Includes SPICES

The previous training programs (courses) for Scouters are inadequate to prepare them for their new roles in the Canadian Path program.

Last fall, Wood Badge I was introduced as on online eLearning component designed to provide Scouters with knowledge on aspects of the Canadian Path.

Scouters expected that skills-based training would be provided for Wood Badge II.  To better understand the components of the Canadian Path, the training method for Wood badge II is similar to and uses many of the delivery concepts that the youth experience in the Canadian Path program.

One of the first concepts to understand is that Wood Badge II will not be delivered as a single comprehensive course.  Training has been divided into 26  Scouter Development Skills.

Scouters can start Wood Badge II training as soon as they complete Wood Badge I online training.  A Scouter will ask a Wood badge II Support Scouter to act as a coach and mentor to help them complete the Scouter Development Skills.

Scouter development should help the Scouter get to the point where he or she can demonstrate a skill with minimal or infrequent support.  In each Scouter Development Skill, the Scouter will progress through four stages as they become competent in a skill.

The goal for Wood Badge II should be that the Scouter will progress to "Stage 3: I Can ..." for each Development Skill.
